The
Core 2 brand is subdivided into Solo (single core) and Duo (dual core)
models, Quad ( 4 core),
plus an Extreme designation carried over from the Pentium
Extreme Edition.
The first generation of Core 2 products all have been
dual core, with future plans for single and quad core varieties.
Intel
Core 2 Duo feature more L2 cache memory, lower clock speeds, and are based on
the Pentium M notebook architecture.
The first Intel Core 2 Duo processor cores,
code-named Conroe, with Intel product code 80557, were launched
in July 2006.
All have an FSB (Front Side Bus) at 1066 MT/s. (MT/s =
MegaTransfers/second)
E6300 (1.86 GHz) and E6400
(2.13 GHz), 2 MiB shared L2 cache, and 65 watts TDP. (TDP = Thermal
Design Power)
E6600 (2.4 GHz)
and E6700 (2.67 GHz), 4 MiB shared L2 cache, and
65 watts TDP.
Coming in 2007: E6550, E6750, E6850, the number ending in "50"
will have a 1333 MT/s FSB & 4 MiB of L2 cache
(MiB = Mebibyte (a contraction
of mega binary byte). 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes
(The mebibyte is a little over
a megabyte (MB, 1,000,000 bytes.)
The Chips code-names Merom are for
portable use, released in July 2006.
Server CPUs are also based on Core microarchitecture,
they are marketed under the Xeon brand rather than Core 2.

945P
/ 945G designed for the superceded Pentium D dual core processor, is a lower
cost option for Core 2 Duo.
Supports DDR2, PCI Express graphics,
memory speed is limited to 667MHz.
P965 / G965 specifically for Core
2 Duo, requires DDR2 memory, supports 800MHz memory..

RAM
Memory
DIMM
memory has 64-bit data path (SIMMs are 32-bit) DDR has 184 pins,
DDR2
has 240-pins
The Core 2 processors work
with DDR memory. They do not require the use of DDR2.
Intel P965 and 975X
chipsets do require DDR2, some motherboards and chipsets support both the Core
2 and DDR memory.
When using DDR memory, performance may be reduced because
of the lower available memory bandwidth.
For the Conroe CPUs with FSB of 1066
MT/s, the ideal memory speed is PC2-4200.
In some configurations, using PC2-5300
can actually decrease performance. Only when going to PC2-6400 is there a significant
performance increase. While expensive DDR2 memory models with tighter timings
do improve performance, the difference in real world games and applications is
negligible.

LGA775: see next
LGA stands for
Land Grid Array, the pins are on the motherboard, not the processor.
The
Pentium 4 core, as well as the Pentium D dual core, currently use the LGA 775
socket type.
In July 2006, Intel released the desktop version of Core 2 (codenamed
Conroe), which utilizes this socket type as well.
Intel changed from Socket
478 to LGA 775 because the new pin type has better power distribution to the processor,
allowing the front side bus to be raised.
The 'T' in Socket T was derived
from the now cancelled Tejas core, which was to replace the Prescott core.

New
numbering system for Intel Processors
Processor
giant, Intel, has announced it will begin including a new numbering system in
the branding of its processors to give greater clarity on the functionality of
its products.
The three-digit numbering system, to be applied to all of Intels
new processors, will differentiate both what brand family (such as Celeron or
Pentium) the chip comes from and also what additional features it includes.
300 sequence of processors will be Celerons,
500 series will be Pentium
4 family and
700 series will be Pentium-M (mobile) chip family
A
higher number in the second two digits of the number will indicate advancements
in features within a chip family.
For example, a 720 would have a higher
front-side bus speed than a 715.
These second two numbers do not just indicate
higher clock-speeds, but other aspects of performance such as front-side bus speed
and cache.
PICMG
The PCI Industrial
Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG) is a consortium of over
450 companies that collaboratively develop open specifications for high performance
telecommunications and industrial computing applications. The members of the consortium
have a long history of developing and using leading edge products for these industries.
It
was founded in 1994 with an original mission to extend the PCI standard. Its specifications
include AdvancedTCA, AdvancedMC, and CompactPCI. -From Wikipedia
PCI-ISA
Passive Backplane Standard - PICMG Information
Plugged
into a passive backplane, they can be replaced quickly in case of breakdown, and
can be easily upgraded.
The cards are industrial grade which have a wider
temperature range and greater vibration & shock resistance.
They are
burned in at 60°C, and use CMOS components
to reduce heat generation.
Industrial features include watchdog timer to
enable detection of a runaway program or CPU hang-up caused by power glitches.
Some have on-board video controller. Most have PC/104
skt for piggy back expansion.
2
serial ports, 1 parallel printer port, POST (Power On Self Test), enhanced
bi-directional parallel port supporting SPP/EPP/ECP (Enhanced Par Port/Extended
Capabilities Port).
Watchdog Timer; Buzzer,
Ctrlr
for 2 IDE hard disks
Ctrlr for two floppy disk drives;
Keyboard Cnnctr (miniDIN, adaptor cable to DIN).
Operating
temp: 0 to 60°C.
The half size cards have sockets for stackable
piggy-back PC/104 cards.
The full size Pentium card PCA-6155V
also has PC/104 expansion.
Full size Pentium cards have PCI bus (32-bit) drivers (PICMG) as well as ISA bus, to drive passive backplane.
DRAM
Memory (SIMMs):
Due to the variations in memory chips, it
is recommended that DRAM memory is ordered with CPU boards to enable testing before
delivery.
Older Pentiums require 72-pin SIMMs in pairs, newer
require 168-pin SDRAM in any number.
All products are CE mark Certified. Advantech has ISO9001 certification.
PCI-bus half-sized CPU cards offer high speed and wide bandwidth computing platforms, together with plug & play, flexible bus mastering and Interrupt sharing.

SNMP - Simple Network Management Protocol Info on SNMP Forms part of the internet protocol suite.
The SNMP-1000-B is a platform independent system management module that can detect system operating conditions and notify users to take necessary action to avert system failure through multiple communication protocols. With the SNMP-1000-B installed, system monitoring and management can be integrated into an existing SNMP-based network management environment.
The SNMP-1000-B also has a built-in web-based administration interface which allows users to monitor system operation from any place with Internet connectivity. The SNMP-1000-B adds another dimension of reliability to your most critical application.
