ATX size: 305mm wide    (12" x 9.7")
depth is often 246mm, can be 210 to 270mm
            

The ATX power supply blows air over the CPU rather than pulling air through the chassis.

ATX superseded the widely-used Baby AT design.
ATX rotates the CPU and memory 90 degrees, allowing full-length boards in all sockets.

The Micro ATX is a smaller version of the ATX with fewer slots.
Micro-ATX size: 243 mm square approx.

Pentium 4 uses 1.7 volts (around 55 W), and also requires a new kind of power supply that ensures the delivery of 10-12 A from the 12V line.
Two additional power connectors are provided for plugging into the motherboard.
One has 4 pins in a square, the other has 6 pins in line.  

CPU Chip Sockets
Pentium II and early Pentium III mount in a Slot 1 socket.
Celeron & AMD K6 chips mount in a Socket 370 (can use a Socket 370 to Slot 1 converter)
Pentium III mount in a Socket 370 = FC-PGA (Flip Chip - Pin Grid Array).

Celeron 1.7GHz  &  Pentium 4  1.8GHz mount in Socket 478
Mobile P4 mount in  µFC-PGA socket
Pentium Xeon mount in Socket 603

Xeon main boards
are usually 305 x 330mm (12" x 13") and need a power supply with special plugs: EPS12V 24-pin + 8 pin plug

Screws:
Power supply and HD:    Four 6-32 UNC screws are required. These have a coarser thread than M3 screws.
Expansion slot cards, floppy disc drives and CD drives require M3 screws. M3 has a finer thread than the UNC 6-32

Screws:
Power supply and HD:    Four 6-32 UNC screws are required. These have a coarser thread than M3 screws.
Expansion slot cards, floppy disc drives and CD drives require M3 screws. M3 has a finer thread than the UNC 6-32

     "Zippy" and "Enhance" are very good quality makes of power supplies.

Some power supplies have EPS12V connectors (24+8pins) (suitable for dual CPU mainboards) instead of ATX (20+4pins).
An adaptor EPS12V to ATX can be supplied on request for $12+GST, for use with ATX mainboards (20+4pins).       chfb

These power supplies are designed for use in Rackmount cases ... reliability is better, and the leads are longer than with standard power supplies for desktop computers.

Pentium 4 uses 1.7 volts (around 55 W), and also requires a new kind of power supply that ensures the delivery of 10-12 A from the 12V line.
Two additional power connectors are provided for plugging into the motherboard.

Pentium 4 heat sinks are supposed to be mounted through four holes around the Socket 423 right through to the computer case, thus avoiding any possible damage to the socket or motherboard. This will require new cases in many occasions.

Pentium 4 processors that run at 1.6 GHz and more require their heat sinks to be grounded (connected to Vss) to avoid EMI. To ensure this board makers have to place ground pads around the mounting holes of the heat sink
