DVD & CD Duplicators & Publishers - also some Blu-ray machines     Blue Ray

Please look at the general information & FAQ below the table          qdf    lls  hmf

DVD/CD       indicates        DVD disk / CD disk
BD/DVD/CD  indicates  Blu-Ray disk / DVD disk / CD disk.   Some duplicators now do Blu-Ray disks. (AKA Blue Ray)

Disk Duplication refers to simple copying: one to many disks.     qdf
Duplication refers to copying from an existing master and typically entails a large number of copies.

Disk Publishing ability refers to the following types of jobs:
Short runs, each disk different, mailmerge of names printed on the disk, serialised numbers printed, better networking.

Disk publishing often involves a new master being created, or only a small number of copies are to be burnt.
There may be a need to create the disk image (or edit an existing one) prior to burning, so the device needs to be linked to a PC.
Publishing includes: short runs, each disk different, mailmerge of names printed on the disk, serialised numbers printed, networking.
PC connection is also necessary where there is a need to perform disk printing in conjunction with the copying or publishing process—the LCD screens provided on the publishing device itself are hardly suited to editing disk titles.

Batch Mode Recording

Anyone wanting to make a small number of copies of different disks will find the Batch Mode recording function on many of our duplicators of huge benefit.
In supporting systems: insert a master disk followed by the desired number of blanks, then another master disk with the desired number of blanks, etc. They machine will automatically read in each master when loaded, and copy that image to the following blanks until the next master is encountered.
The number of copies of each is dictated by the number of blank disks following each master.

Units supporting Batch Mode recording:
All R-Quest Robotics eg TCP and TCA series
All Primera Robotics eg Bravo and Composer Series

N.B. Printing is not supported with Batch Mode recording, as the controlling systems do not know what to print on the recorded discs - only what to burn!

Burning/Printing Ratios and Redundancy

These two concepts should be at the top of any list of important features to look for when buying a CD or DVD production system.

Burning / Printing Ratios: When printing and burning discs it is important to minimize the chances of hitting a production bottleneck, as burning a disk takes longer than printing the disk.
A "one drive" duplicator" will not produce disks as fast as a disk printer can print them.

An 8 burner duplicator spitting out 8 discs every 3 minutes does not match a printer which can only complete one or two discs in the same time!

While it can change depending upon the specific printer and robotics, as a rule of thumb, we suggest a 2:1 burner to printer ratio with CD systems, and 4:1 with DVD systems because DVDs take longer to burn.

Redundancy: In production systems minimizing downtime is essential. We often suggest production clients buy two or more smaller systems in place of one big system. While we always want our equipment to work reliably, should something go wrong it is far better to lose 50% or less of your production in place of 100%! If the systems are burn and print systems, then it can also allow better flexibility in getting the best RATIO of printers and burners. Don’t forget that this strategy can also dramatically increase your disc capacity.

Burning speeds: Even though disks may be rated at 52x for CDs, or 16x for DVDs, for good quality copies and the least number of rejects, lower speeds are generally used. e.g. 16x is widely used for duplicating audio CDs, and 8x or 4x for DVDs.

Blu-ray capable machines:

The name Blu-ray Disc is derived from the blue-violet laser used to read and write this type of disc.
Because of its shorter wavelength (405 nm), substantially more data can be stored on a Blu-ray Disc than on the DVD format, which uses a red (650 nm) laser.

A single layer Blu-ray Disc can store 25 gigabytes (GB), over five times the size of a single layer DVD at 4.7 GB.
A dual layer Blu-ray Disc can store 50 GB, almost six times the size of a dual layer DVD at 8.5 GB.

Manual Burners

Tower burners with several drives burn disks simultaneously, so you can get some disks quickly.
Robotic burners (automatic) burn one at a time (or a few at a time in big machines), so take longer.

Disk burning speed information

There is no guarantee that the maximum burn speed stated for disks will be achieved.
This is because of variations in the disks and variations in the drives.
Blank DVD disks contain a MID code which is read by the drive when the disk is inserted. (MID = Manufacturer Identification)
Similarly, CD blanks have an ATIP Code (Absolute Time In Pre-groove).
The codes indicates the manufacturer and disk model.
Disk drives contain, in their firmware, a list of MID & ATIP codes with the maximum speed setting, etc, for each code.
Drive manufacturers test various disks and determine the maximum reliable burn speeds for particular codes.
If the drive does not recognise the code, then the drive may default to its minimum burn speed.

It is possible for a particular disk to burn faster or slower on different drives, sometimes an old drive may even burn faster than a new drive.
It is also possible for drives to attempt a faster burn than the disk is capable of in that drive.
So, for reliable results, slow speeds are recommended. With faster speeds, some rejects may occur, and some experimenting may need to be done.

MID codes can be read by software such as DVD Identifier (called Unique Disk Identifier), Kprobe (for Lite-On DVD Burners on the PC) or NeroDiscSpeed.
Disks are often manufactured by companies with names you probably have not heard of,
eg. CMC Magnetics, UmeDisc in China.
and marketed by companies with well known names.
Other manufacturers: Sony, TDK, Mitsubishi, Ricoh, Ritek, Prodisc, Taiyo Yuden.
Verbatim disks are made by Mitsubishi or CMC Magnetics. TDK may be from CMC Magnetics.

Recording times:                  qdf    lls  hmf
CD recording depends on what speed of burning you choose. Here are approximate recording times at each speed:
1x : 74 mins (650MB)    8x : 9 mins (650 MB)    16x : 4.5 mins (650 MB)   32x: 2.25min
Note: recording at lower speeds can give better quality disks.
Data rate of 1x speed is 150KBytes/sec.
Time must be added to allow for the robotic mechanism to change over the disks.

DVD recording time has little relationship to the video playing time of the DVD because of varying data compression..
DVD recording time depends on speed of the recorder and amount of data (MB or GB Gigabytes).
You can usually see how much of a master disk contains data: recording starts near the middle of the disk and proceeds outwards towards the edge.

16x DVD-R and +R writing speeds: DVD writing drive will burn a full single layer DVD, 4.7GB, in around 4 minutes.

Audio CD information: CD Digital Audio format "Red Book" is encoded by starting with a source sound file, and sampling it to convert it to digital format.
CD-DA audio uses a sample rate of 44.1 kHz, which is roughly double the highest frequency audible by humans (around 22 kHz.)
Each sample is 16 bits (2 bytes) in size, and the sampling is done in stereo.
Therefore, each second of stereo sound takes 44,100 * 2 bytes * 2 channels (left & right), which is 176,400 bytes per second.

Audio data is stored on the disk in blocks, which are also sometimes called sectors.
Each block holds 2,352 bytes of data, with an additional number of bytes used for error detection and correction, as well as control structures.
Therefore, the number of blocks required for each second of sound is 176,500/2352 = 75 blocks.
On a standard 74-minute CD then, the total amount of storage is (2,352 bytes * 75 blocks * 74 min * 60 sec.),
which is 783,216,000 bytes or about 747 MB.  Note: this is the 74-minute audio CD format, not the data CD format (see next item).
So, a minute of uncompressed CD audio uses about 10 MB.

Data CD: CD-ROM information: "Yellow Book", High Sierra and ISO 9660
Mode 1: This is the standard data storage mode used by virtually all standard data CDs used with computers.
The data is laid out in basically the same way as it is in standard audio CD format, except that the 2,352 bytes of data in each block are broken down further.
2,048 of these bytes are for "real" data. The other 304 bytes are used for an additional level of error detecting and correcting code.
This is necessary because data CDs cannot tolerate the loss of a handful of bits now and then, the way audio CDs can.
Total data capacity of 74 minute Data CD is 2048/2352 x 747MB = 650 MB   (80 minute CDs can hold 700MB of data)
Mode 2: Mode 2 data CDs are the same as mode 1 CDs except that the error detecting and correcting codes are omitted.
Hmm. Why would they define this then, when it is so similar to standard audio CDs?
The reason is that mode 2 format provides a more flexible vehicle for storing types of data that do not require high data integrity: for example, graphics and video can use this format. Furthermore, different kinds can be mixed together; this is the basis for the extensions to the original data CD standards known as CD-ROM Extended Architecture, or CD-ROM XA.

"Multi-session" CDs can have more than one set of data on the disk, recorded at different times, and therefore use multiple tables of contents, one per session.
The table of contents is also sometimes called the index of the disk.

CD+G format CD duplicators

CD+G format is used for karaoke and contains music and graphics.
The R-Quest duplicators with part numbers starting TCA and TCP support CD+G format.
None of the other machines support it.
This format contains some sub-code on the CD which requires special drives and controllers to support it.

Note that commercial DVDs containing copyright material such as movies, are encrypted and double layered.
The decryption keys are stored on the disk in lead in area, which is inaccessible to DVD readers & copiers, and so these DVDs are not readable if copied.

Video Info: The native format of all digital formats is Y Cr Cb.   In PAL countries substitute V for Cr, and U for Cb: YVU
Y is the luminance signal
(brightness) derived from RGB as a mixture of 58.7% G, plus 29.9% R, plus 11.4% B.
The Cb and Cr (V and U) components carry the chrominance information (colour) of the picture.
They are mathematically derived from the original RGB and -Y (inverted luminance) information, Cr is 0.877(Red -Y), and Cb is 0.493(Blue - Y).

2.  Tower Burn Multi-Drive DVD/CD Duplicators - Manual

Standard Warranty period is one year.   Extended Warranty to two years total is available... please enquire.

EvoceptCopyBlast ECB series

The standard models (ECB1603, ECB1607) have a disk drive for the source,
and 3 or 7 DVD/CD recording drives for making the copies.
Hence these models will copy from the master disc directly to 3 or 7 blanks in one run.

The Pro models have a 160GB hard disk drive and 2 DVD/CD recording drives.

With the Pro models, you can use one disk drive to read the master, leaving one less drive for writing the blank disks, or
in order to record the maximum number of copies, the master disc can be copied to the hard drive first, before starting to produce copies. Once the master has been read onto the hard drive, the machines will then copy 3, 7 or 10 blanks per run.
Multiple CD or DVD images may be stored on the hard drive at once, for quick retrieval.

Note that these models do not connect to a PC, so they always require a master CD or DVD to read the content from (either onto the hard drive or direct to the blank CDs/DVDs).

Recording Speeds:

A full 700MB CD-R takes approx. 4 minutes 15 seconds per run, at the reliable speed of x16.

DVD recording time has little relationship to the video or audio playing time of the DVD because of data compression..
DVD recording time depends on speed of the recorder and amount of data (MB or GB GigaBytes).

At the maximum speed, typically to burn a full 4.7GB DVD-R (single layer) it takes approx 6 minutes 35 seconds per run.
For a full 8.5GB DVD+R DL it takes approx. 18 minutes 45 seconds per run.
However better quality disks may be obtained by burning at slower speeds.

The above times are to burn the number of blanks that the machine can do at once,
i.e. a 7 drive tower will produce 7 discs in the above quoted time.

ECB Models:   ECB1603   ECB1607

PP-50 Discproducer - 1 Drive 50 Disc

PP-50Epson's Discproducer PP-50 model was designed for smaller output requirements.
It has all the same features of the Standard 100 model (see below), but with a smaller capacity.
It can burn and print up to 50 discs at a speed of 15 CDs or 8 DVDs per hour and
features two operating modes instead of three:
a standard mode for production runs up to 50 discs and a
low volume mode for runs up to 20 discs.

50 disc capacity
Highest quality printing in its class
Six high capacity ink cartridges with low ink level sensors
AcuGrip™ technology for reliable media handling
Publishes up to 15 CDs or 8 DVDs per hour
PP-50 OpenEasy access to media and inks
Economical to operate and maintain
Compact rugged construction for top reliability

Thanks to Epson's individual inks system, the cost of each produced media is low as you only need to replace the colour used and, depending on the print image, you can produce over 1,000 discs from one set of cartridges.
And when a cartridge becomes empty, the PP-50 automatically stops printing until it's replaced to avoid miss-prints.
The Epson Discproducer also provides you with more affordable disc duplication and printing.
Cost per Disc calculations are based on Epson's Internal Testing with a set of new ink cartridges.

The built-in blue LED lighting not only helps you see what's going on inside, but pulses when supplies are getting low and blinks on/off if an error condition is reported. You'll always know the status of your jobs whether you're sitting next to the unit or standing on the other side of the room.

Powerful Software that's Easy to Use
Using the Bravo 4100-Series is as easy as printing to any office printer. Primera's PTPublisher™ Software has won critical acclaim for its simple, wizard-style interface. Training new operators takes just minutes instead of hours.

Simply choose the type of job you want to perform (data, video, audio, etc.), match with a print file, and press "GO." It's that easy!

Built-in disc design software called SureThing™ Primera Edition (Windows) or DiscCover™ (Mac) lets you place photos, backgrounds, text and graphics anywhere on the disc, including as far into the middle of the disc as you wish – a major limitation with other brands of disc publishers.

Built-In Apps
Extra built-in software applications include:
PTRip™: robotically "RIPs" your personal music CDs and loads them into Apple® iTunes® for iPhone®, iPod® and iPod Touch® or Microsoft® Media Player.
PTBackUp™: automatic, scheduled back-ups of your files to CDs, DVDs or Blu-ray Discs.
PTProtect™: prevents unauthorized duplication of your valuable DVD video files. Three free protections are included.

Integration Made Easy
Sometimes integration is required for applications like PACS/DICOM medical imaging systems, law enforcement and surveillance video, back up and archival, audio and video on-demand and more. Primera makes integration easy with a simple yet comprehensive Software Developer's Kit (SDK) for both Windows and Mac. The SDK is free to qualified developers.

PTProtect - copy protect DVD-Video

Finally an easy to use and affordable way to copy protect DVD-Video.
Primera have announced PTProtect into their latest version of their PTPublisher software for the Bravo and XR series of disc publishers – v1.3.0.
With a simple tick box option PTProtect software is applied to the DVD image just before burning.
When content is burned to a disc it is encapsulated to prevent common ripping programs from having access to it.
The content on the DVD is not modified in any way and the copy control encapsulation resides in areas of the discs not read by DVD players, so the play-back quality remains unaffected.
Each installation of PTPublisher comes with 3 free licenses to test, and then USB keys with licenses can be purchased to protect more discs.
More information can be found at here including a very useful technology white paper!

May 2009 - evocept CopyBlast Video Lock – Following an increase in interest in copy protection with Primera’s recent release of PTProtect, many of our tower clients have requested a product capable of protecting their DVD-Video content.
Our new CopyBlast Video Lock line supports standard 20x duplication, and two protected version 8x copy modes – one that allows playback on standalone devices and PC’s, but only protects for mass tower duplication - and the other that disables PC playback entirely while retaining standalone player compatibility but won’t copy on a standard computer or a tower.
