CD and DVD media come in three basic types:
Thermal printable,  Inkjet Printable  and  "not machine printable" (ink from a printer will not adhere to the surface).
The first two above are normally white. Inkjet compatible surfaces are slightly porous.  
"Wide" where specified means that the printable surface extends right in to the edge of the central hole
Disk Printers: There are Thermal disk printers and Inkjet disk printers, see the printer link above.
If there is no specification for thermal or inkjet printabiliy, then "not machine printable" may be assumed.

Pronunciation:   DVD-R is pronounced   "DVD dash R"   (not "minus R").
