CD and DVD media
come in three basic types:
Thermal printable, Inkjet Printable and
"not machine printable"
(ink from a printer will not adhere to the surface).
The first two above are
normally white. Inkjet compatible surfaces are slightly porous.
"Wide"
where specified means that the printable surface extends right in to the edge
of the central hole
Disk Printers: There are Inkjet disk printers and
Thermal disk printers, see the printer link above.
If there is no specification
for thermal or inkjet printabiliy, then "not machine printable" may
be assumed.
LightScribe
Direct Disc Labeling is a new technology that
offers consumers and businesses a simple, no-hassle way to burn professional,
silkscreen-quality labels on their CDs or DVDs. Using the same laser that burns
data in their disc drives, customers burn their data as always, flip the disc
over, reinsert it into the drive and burn a precise and permanent iridescent label.
You must have a LightScribe-enabled disc drive (either built into your desktop
or notebook PC or an external drive).
To see if you have a LightScribe-enabled
disc drive, look for the LightScribe logo. Slim drives may not have space to show
the logo.
You also need LightScribe label software and
LightScribe system software.
Blank disks can have a "Thermal
Printable" shiny surface, or an "Inkjet printable"
surface which is slightly porous.
Not
all disks with shiny surface will take the thermal printing, however. They should
be specified as Thermal Printable.
Autoloading Inkjet Printers make
your life easy by automatically loading and unloading the disks for you.

Just set and forget and your disks all get printed! Automated
thermal printers run separately from disk duplicators.

Using the Bravo 4100-Series is as easy as printing to any office printer. Primera's PTPublisher™ Software has won critical acclaim for its simple, wizard-style interface. Training new operators takes just minutes instead of hours.
Simply choose the type of job you want to perform (data, video, audio, etc.), match with a print file, and press "GO."
Built-in disc design software called SureThing™ Primera Edition (Windows) or DiscCover™ (Mac) lets you place photos, backgrounds, text and graphics anywhere on the disc, including as far into the middle of the disc as you wish – a major limitation with other brands of disc publishers.
