Firewire
4-pin small connector does not provide power to connected devices,
the bigger
6-pin connector has pins to supply power (if connected).
PCMCIA or ExpressCard
Firewire cards may need an external plug pack when used in a Notebook computer.
Firewire
offers more robust data transfer overall compared to USB. The CPU load is lower
with high quality FireWire chips.
Firewire devices can be connected in series
forming a logical chain (peer to peer). The protocol also permits physical branchings.
Thanks to this method, it is possible to span longer stretches. However, if
an interconnected device needs to be removed, then it is necessary to interrupt
the connection for all the devices that follow in the chain.
The existing
bandwidth (400 or 800MBit/sec) is shared by all the devices on the chain.
The
maximum cable length from device to device is max. 4.5 m at full power.
FireWire
devices will generally also run without difficulties under Linux and Mac OS.
