There are four types of USB connectors: Type A, Type B, the Mini A, and the Mini B.
USB 1.1 specifies Type A and Type B.

USB On-The-Go

A new USB standard, USB On-The-Go, is being developed.
It enables portable equipment, such as PDAs, digital music players, and mobile phones, to connect to each other without the need for a PC host.

The standards for USB are defined by the USB-IF (USB - Implementers Forum).
When they released USB 2.0, speed clauses were added (now discontinued), so that reference to "USB 1.1" would no longer need to be made.

USB 2.0 High Speed had data rate 480Mbps
USB 2.0 Full Speed had data rate 12Mbps ( i.e. this is the same as USB 1.1 at 12Mbps)
USB 2.0 Low Speed had data rate 1.5Mbps (used for mouses and other devices not dependent on fast data rate).

After protest, the USB-IF is dropping the "High speed, Full Speed, Low Speed" labels,
replacing them with with one "USB" logo, and clearly indicating the speed.

    So, always check the actual speed figure associated with USB!

M17083 USB Switch / Watchdog Timer

Configure as a USB controlled switch that can be operated over your network or as a USB watchdog that turns the power off and on to restart a computer. Contacts are rated at 240V 15A.
There is native support for Windows ME, 2000, XP and .NET.
Support is also provided for Win98 and Linux. An API is also provided.

Our M17083 is a PC controlled power switch that turns devices operated at 230 V on and off.
The maximum current is 16 A, maximum 3.500 W rated load AC1 (non inductive).
The M17083 should be operated in inner rooms only and should be protected against humidity.
The permissible operating temperature range is 10° - 60° Celsius.
The software ClewareControl may turn the 17083 into a time switch.
Different repeat interval, start and end times may be specified.
The M17083 may also be controlled via a network. The connection is established with the TCP/IP protocol.
On the remote control PC the 17083 appears like a local device and could be handled the same way.

Several devices even on different PCs could be controlled simultaneously.
An application program interface (API) to drive the 17083 from programs is part of the bundle.
The API includes some very simple functions for opening and reading the device.
An ActiveXDLL is available for use with Visual Basic.
Every Switch has its own unique serial number. This makes it easy to identify the devices even
when the USB plug position changes or when new USB devices are connected.
The serial number is accessible through the API and therefore could be used as a simple dongle.
