Astronauts'
space suits must protect them against hazardously extreme conditions including
lack of pressure and oxygen, radiation, micrometeoroids and temperature extremes.
In space the difference between sun and shade can be hundreds of degrees. The
DaqPRO has been selected to help space suit developers and researchers at a
leading Asian Space Agency counter the dangers of exposure to extremely high
temperatures.
Two DaqPRO units are being used by the Agency to test the heat flux of astronauts' space suits in the field of aerospace thermal protection testing. Military engineers are using the units in rigorous thermal testing procedures.
These tests include: Heat-resistant protective clothing tests, high temperature gas dynamics tests, propellant and powder performance tests and energy saving, thermal insulation performance tests. The fire science scientists used a selection of heat sensors offered by Fourier.
Available temperature sensors inputs from Fourier for the DaqPRO include the NTC, PT100, Temperature Thermocouple J with a range of -200 to 1200 ºC; Temperature Thermocouple K with a range of -250 to 1,200 ºC and Temperature Thermocouple T with a range of -200 to 400 ºC.
- Each input is differential with 2-wire connection
- Sensors are connected via pluggable screw terminals
- 3-wire PT100 sensors are supported by using 2 input channels per sensor (max. 4 PT100 3-wire sensors in this configuration)
- Battery life is 25 hours between charges, and the battery is rechargeable
with the mains adaptor provided with the logger.
For longer duration applications the logger can be run directly
from the mains adaptor, keeping the battery as a backup power source.
- The logger automatically powers off after 15 minutes of inactivity to save battery life
- Note that Channel 8 can be used as an alarm output, or a pulse/frequency input, or an analog input
- Memory: The logger can store a maximum of 512,000 samples total in its internal memory.
- The total number of samples that can be stored is divided by 1, 2, 4 or 8
according to the number of channels in use, as follows:
1 channel yields 512000 samples of storage; 2 channels yields
256000 samples per channel,
3 or 4 channels yield 128000 samples per channel, 5 to 8 channels
yield 64000 samples per channel.
- The logger can be used whilst connected to a PC to log data directly to the
PC (and show a real time graph) using DaqLab software.
This “Continuous Mode” operation allows a virtually unlimited
number of samples to be logged continuously to the PC’s hard drive.
This mode is only available with sampling rates slower than 1 sample/sec
(temperature sensors) or 100 samples/sec (voltage/current sensors).
- For multi-channel setups, all channels record at the same sampling rate.
- A few limitations apply to the sampling intervals available (note this applies to v3.0h or higher of the DaqPRO):
• Maximum sampling rate with one sensor is 4000/s, when using the Current or Voltage sensors only.
• Maximum sampling rate when using any of the temperature sensors is 1/s.
For instance, when using thermocouples, internal temp. sensors, and so on.• Maximum sampling rate with two or more sensors of any type is 1/s.
• DaqPRO displays readings in real-time at rates up to 1/s (Continuous mode)
• DaqLab displays online readings at rates up to 100/s, depending on the sensors connected.
If temperature sensors are being used, then the maximum rate is 1/sec.
- The DaqPro offers several advanced logging features including:
• Alarm levels can be set on each channel, with optional open collector alarm output via channel 8;
• Triggered start – the logger will start recording when a measurement passes an upper or lower threshold;
• Event recording – the logger will record the exact time whenever an input crosses a threshold
• Time delayed start – the logger will start recording after a pre-determined time interval.
• Real-world unit conversion – the logger converts voltage or current signals into real-world units, using a linear mapping, and will display the units on its screen and in the DaqLab software.
• Averaging – the logger records the average of the last N measurements at each sampling time.
This is useful for smoothing out random noise or eliminating mains interference.• External temperature compensation – for thermocouple measurements, an external temperature reference sensor can be attached to input 1 and used instead of the internal CJC (Cold Junction Compensation) sensor.
- The logger can be re-calibrated via a simple procedure using DaqLab software
- The easy to use DaqLab software offers advanced analysis functions on the recorded data, including:
• Curve fitting
• FFT (Fourier transforms)
• Upper and lower envelope calculation
• Averaging / smoothing
• Integral
• Add / subtract channels
• Many other mathematical functions can be
applied to the recorded data
- DaqLab allows data to be easily exported or imported to/from Excel
