For Food Technology, Horticulture, Environment
High concentrations of carbon dioxide results in unconsciousness and even death.

As high concentrations of CO2 are clearly hazardous, most countries have set exposure limits in the workplace.
In Great Britain, for instance, the weighted average exposure limit for an 8 hour working day is 5000 ppm;
a higher limit of 15,000 ppm applies to an exposure up to 10 minutes.

Applications where carbon dioxide can rise to dangerous levels include the brewing and carbonated drinks industries, food freezing using dry ice, cold storage, cargo ships, and, of course, plants where CO2 or dry ice is produced or handled.

Air quality and ventilation
Even when the carbon dioxide concentration is not high enough to cause problems, it is a good indicator of indoor air quality in general.
A high CO2 level is usually a sign of poor ventilation and the presence of odours and other pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Poor ventilation also increases the risk of high humidity and in the worst case, a radon build-up in the building.
Demand Controlled Ventilation (DCV) is often based on carbon dioxide measurement.
Higher concentrations of CO2 indicate the presence of people in the room.

Beneficial effects in greenhouses
On the positive side, carbon dioxide can enhance plant growth.
In greenhouses and mushroom farms, the growth rate and development of mushrooms and plants - from cucumbers to most luxurious roses - can be improved by controlling the concentration of carbon dioxide.
This raises the productivity and quality of the crops.
In some cases, the CO2 concentration is used to control when fruits and vegetables ripen.
The concentration of CO2, however, must be carefully adjusted.
If the carbon dioxide level rises too high, the plants can be damaged or their growth stunted.

Food packaging
Adding carbon dioxide to food packaging can considerably extend the storage and shelf life of meat, cheese as well as fruit and vegetables.
In meat packaging, for example, a high concentration of CO2 in the packaging inhibits bacterial growth and retains the natural coloring of the meat.

New product:

GMW116 Carbon Dioxide and Temperature Transmitter
   Vaisala CARBOCAP®

Carbon dioxide & temperature transmitter for HVAC applications

The new Vaisala CARBOCAP® Carbon Dioxide and Temperature Transmitter GMW116 is a wall-mounted sensor designed for HVAC applications.

It has all the benefits familiar to the GMW115 CO2 transmitter with its proven track record:

• Ideal for ventilation control in all types of occupied spaces including those with round-the-clock occupancy
• Advanced single-beam dual wavelength measurement with no moving parts
• Excellent long-term stability
• Warranty time 2 years

The GMW116 has two 0 ... 10 V outputs scaled 0 ... 2000 ppm CO2 and 0 ... 50 °C.
As the GMW116 measures the temperature it can naturally compensate for the ideal gas temperature dependence causing most of the temperature dependence in CO2 transmitters.
It offers these additional benefits:
• No need for temperature compensation
• Compact dual-parameter transmitter; measures both CO2 and T

GMT220 Series Industrial Carbon Dioxide Transmitter

Vaisala's GMT220 series are the first CARBOCAP® transmitters available for a wide range of industrial CO2 applications including
greenhouses, fruit storage, safety alerts and demand-controlled ventilation in mushroom farms, livestock husbandry and parking garages.
The GMT220 series transmitters are designed to measure CO2 in harsh and humid environments.
The housing is dust and water proof to IP65/NEMA4. The materials have been chosen for extended corrosion resistance

The transmitter is easy-to-use and easy to install.
The GMT220 series transmitters have a modular structure, which includes a separate mounting plate that eases the installation.

Since the probes of the transmitter are truly interchangeable, they facilitate the field maintenance.
The probes can either be replaced by newly calibrated probes or separate ones that can be used as reference probes for calibration checking.
This minimizes the downtime and eliminates the need for expensive calibration equipment.

The GMT222 is very well suited to monitoring CO2 levels in car parks for demand controlled ventilation, as it is protected against the harsh dust, water and exhaust fumes that often exist in car parks. Its built-in dual alarm relays can be factory pre-set to switch on at a given CO2 concentration, making the GMT222 a simple solution for the task. Typically for car parks these sensors are configured for a measurement range of 0-5000ppm, and the alarm set point can be configured as per council requirements (usually 1000ppm or higher).

GMW21D - for controlling ventilation in buildings according to CO2 levels:

The GMW21D is an ideal CO2 sensor for controlling ventilation in buildings to control indoor CO2 and air quality levels. It has a relay output which can be used to switch on a ventilation fan when the CO2 level becomes too high (e.g. due to a large number of people being in the room for a long time).

The GMW21D is shipped with a pre-set threshold of 1000ppm, which is the CO2 level recommended for optimum indoor air quality and comfort by ASHRAE (American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers). However if this threshold is not suitable for an application, the CO2 threshold can be adjusted by connecting the sensor to a PC and running the Vaisala PC software.

Note that for controlling ventilation in rooms, the GMW21D should typically be wall-mounted at head height, away from any air conditioning or ventilation ducts.   See the link above for full data.

Note: the relay output rating on the GMW21D is 50V / 0.5A, so in most cases it is necessary to connect it via another power relay for switching a mains powered ventilation fan.

The GMW21 is only recommended for use indoors, as its electronic circuit board is exposed to the air.
For use in locations such as car parks, the GMD20D is better suited, as its electronic circuit board is fully enclosed so it will not be affected by the harsh dust, exhaust fumes and occasional water droplets that can occur in car parks. However for maximum reliability in environments such as car parks, it is recommended to use the GMT222 (above) which is designed for use in harsh environments.
