11 questions to ask yourself before buying an industrial PC

When you need to purchase an industrial PC, it is easy to overlook some of the critical factors surrounding the system and its environment. To allow us to provide you with the most optimal solution, please consider the following questions when asking us for a quotation.

1. How critical is this PC?
In other words, how will it impact you if the PC fails or is inadequate for the task, now and into the future?
2. What work will this PC perform?
e.g. Industrial process control, Workstation, Server, Multimedia production, Digital Signage, Kiosk
3. What environmental conditions will the PC be operated in?
e.g. clean office, server room, dusty factory, corrosive atmosphere, marine deck, marine bridge, vehicle, wash down area, high humidity, etc.
4. What ambient temperature range will it need operate in, and is there any fan forced ventilation to assist the PC with heat dissipation?
Consider the worst case scenario, e.g. outdoors in a weatherproof cabinet it could easily reach 60 degrees C ambient.
5. What type of PC case is required?
e.g. Industrial Box PC (fanless or not), Rackmount PC, Regular tower case, Panel PC (with monitor all-in-one), etc
6. What physical size constraints are there?
ie. maximum depth / width / height, screen size and aspect for panel PC’s.
7. What power supply will be available?
 e.g. 240V mains, 12V DC, 24V DC, -48V DC etc
8. What operating system and application software will the PC need to run?
9. What performance specifications are required?
ie. CPU type and speed, how much RAM memory, discrete graphics, etc
10. What are the data storage requirements and capacity?
e.g. Hard drive, SSD, industrial DOM, enterprise grade / mission critical, RAID, DVD burner, floppy drive, etc
11. What special requirements are there?
e.g. ISA slots for legacy cards, serial ports, compatibility, etc.
