News, January 2013: Hazardous locations
Advantech Announces ADAM-4000 and ADAM-6000 Series have received UL Approved Class I, Division 2 Certification.
They can be used in hazardous locations, i.e. gas, mining, oil or petrochemical industry where highly flammable substances may be produced, processed, stored, and transported to ensure the safety of the industrial facility.
Certified for use in the oil and gas industries, the Advantech ADAM-4000 Series and ADAM-6000 Series won’t cause explosions if gases, vapors and liquids are present.
Class I, Flammable Gases, Vapours or Liquids:
Division 2: Where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, vapours or liquids are not likely to exist under normal operating conditions.
Zone 2: Where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, vapours or liquids are not likely to exist under normal operating conditions.

Sensor to computer or PLC interface for remote data acq & control
ADAM-4000 modules are compact, intelligent sensor-to- computer or PLC interface devices with built-in microprocessors which provide signal conditioning, analog I/O, digital I/O and comms all in an industrial hardened package. Can make stand alone, on/off controllers.
Warranty period: 2 years.
ADAM modules stand out because of their ability to accommodate multiple types and ranges of analog input. You select the type and range remotely by issuing commands from the host computer.
You may use just one type of unit for many different tasks, greatly simplifying design and maintenance.
They translate analog data into one of the following formats: engineering units, % of FSR, two’s complement or ohms. After the modules receive a request from the host, they send the data in the desired format over the RS-485 network.

Speed of ADAM-4000 Series System
For acquiring one data reading from an ADAM module, the host sends a string command to
the module and waits for the module response, then the response string back to the PC via communication line.
So the total time is depended on how long is the command string and the response string,
and how fast is the baud rate.
For example, if you use 115200 bps baud rate, it will take (1/115200)*10 seconds to send one character
(total 10 bits including start bit, 8 data bits and stop bit).
The total communication time to read one slot DI data from ADAM-5051 will be:
((character number)/11520+0.002) seconds
where (character number) is the total characters for command and response
and 0.002 is the wait time of ADAM-5051.
With the communication time to read 1-slot data, you can derive the maximum sampling speed in your application.
The sampling speed of A/D modules can be calculated in the same way.
ADAM modules with multiple channels support the read all channel command,
you can take use of it to save the acquiring time.
An ADAM system running with the GeniDAQ software, the minimum scan period is 10 ms.

Analog Input Modules

- Output data formats: engineering units, % of FSR, twos complement, or ohms. Data is sent in desired format when req. by host
- Some analog modules contain two digital outputs and one digital input channel. They can drive solid state relays which in turn can control equipment.
Programmable Alarm Output
Analog input modules include high and low alarm signalling. After every A/D conversion, the digital value is compared with the high and low limit. The module can change the state of a digital output depending on the result of this comparison. This lets it perform On/Off control of a device independent of the host PC.
Event Counter On-board event counter can count to 65,535 transitions on the digital input.
The counter is read and cleared by the host. Max sample rate: 50Hz.

- A Windows PC is generally required to configure the modules initially, using the software supplied with the module.
- Adam modules can be controlled using simple ASCII commands over the serial link.
- An ADAM-4520 RS-232 to RS-422/485 converter may be needed, unless your PC has an RS-422/485 port.
- Once this initial configuration has been done, the module stores the configuration in its internal non-volatile memory.
- You can then connect any serial device to it and use the simple ASCII commands to read data.
ADAM-4015 RTD Input Module – 6 channel

ADAM-4017 & ADAM-4017+ notes
ADAM-4017 & ADAM-4017+ can be controlled using simple ASCII commands over the serial link, similar to the other Adam modules.
For example, to read analog data from input 3 on ADAM module number 01, simply send “#013” to the module. The complete set of commands is described in the ADAM-4000 series operation manual.
Version �D2 is the current model which has a higher input impedance (2M versus 200k for the -D version).
The �D2 is the only one available now. It supports �10V inputs.
ADAM-4019 Universal Analog Input Module – 8 channel

ADAM-4080/4080D Counter/Frequency Input Module
Two 32-bit counter channels, isolated, and a built-in programmable timer for frequency measurement.
Digital alarm functions. You can download alarm values (32-bit) into the module from your host computer.
Programmable Digital Filter and Threshold: a unique programmable digital filter to reject noise on the input signal. You can specify separate time constants to provide stable output readings.
You can preset the counters from your host computer. ADAM-4080 runs at up to 38.4Kbps (the other ADAM modules run at up to 115Kbps).
Front Panel Display: The ADAM-4080D module’s 5-digit LED displays the data being sent over a RS-485 line to the host computer. Programmed to show either channel 0 or channel 1. The ADAM-4080D enables users to monitor counter, frequency and RPM data as it is being transmitted.

Included with ADAM modules.
This driver lets you control ADAM modules from any programming language that works with DLLs, including Visual Basic, Microsoft C++, Turbo C++ and Turbo Pascal. The driver package includes a VBX custom control for Visual basic and an easy to use Windows setup program with terminal emulation.
The driver works with COM ports 1 to 4. It supports all ADAM functions except for the ADAM-4080D’s counter (Counter/Frequency module).
