DataTaker Data Loggers
DataTaker Data Loggers
General Description of Datataker data loggers
From two channel data loggers up to systems with hundreds of analog inputs and many digital inputs. These loggers read, return, and/or store analog & digital data in engineering units from just about any electrical sensor or analog instrument. thermocouples, transistor temperature sensors, RTDs, strain gauges, current loop outputs from other instruments, voltages, currents, resistance, frequency, period, etc, (except AC).
AC voltages and currents may be measured by using external signal conditioners to convert to DC signals, or else Modbus transducers such as the Dent PowerScout. (opens in new tab)
Analog input channels can also sense logic level inputs (0/1). Readings are time & date stamped automatically. The loggers are autoranging and auto calibrating and have 15-bit resolution (1:40,000, 1µv). Accuracy is 0.15%, trimmable.
The DT80 series’ Ethernet port can be connected to the internet via standard networks, allowing remote access. The DT80M also includes a built-in 3G modem, allowing remote access as well as SMS alerts.
The digital inputs (with resistor pull-ups) sense ON/OFF states of contacts, etc, or count pulses over a desired period, either resetting or not resetting the counter at the end of each period.
Readings may be returned directly or converted to more useful form by changing the span limits or linearising with polynomials within the logger. Also, readings may be averaged, with standard deviation, maximums, minimums, & times these occurred.
The loggers allow calculations to be made within the logger on readings from any channel, or between channels. There are internal variables for intermediate calculations and results, which may be read out or logged to memory. The loggers can determine change and rate of change on any channel, and perform integration.
The data may be either returned to a computer as it is collected (via RS-232 port / USB / Ethernet),
or may be stored in the logger’s own memory for later retrieval.
Internal memory holds approx 10 million readings (DT80 series). The internal flash storage may be upgraded by Esis to allow much more storage than this – please enquire.
Connection to the host computer can be made in several ways: Ethernet, USB, and serial Host Port. A separate USB port on the top allows USB flash drives to be used for extra storage, or automatic unloading of data from the logger (without needing to connect a PC).
The loggers have an in-built battery, allowing stand-alone use. Auxiliary batteries may be connected.
Mains frequency (50Hz) pick-up on the input leads is cancelled out. The reading rate is 25 readings per sec. (The reading rate can be made faster by reducing channel settle time, and integrate period, but the mains rejection is decreased).
What’s NASA doing with a little Aussie logger? Same thing as the West German military, Danish Atomic Energy, General Motors, Volvo, ICI, ESSO, Antarctic bases (60 loggers), sales offices worldwide. Just about all Universities and CSIROs in Australia, many industrial companies, Sydney Water uses over one hundred, Ausgrid & AGL have many.
Easy to setup and control
Most standard data logging configurations can be easily set up using the graphical web-based dEX interface and a standard web browser (requires Flash).
For more complex configurations, a script can be developed using the logger’s own scripting language, which is easy to use and well documented. Esis has extensive experience programming Datataker loggers, please enquire for our rates.
Software
dEX: The loggers themselves include a built-in web server called dEX which allows the logger to be configured, as well as data to be viewed and downloaded. All you need is a standard web browser with Adobe Flash.
The web interface can be accessed when the logger is connected up via Ethernet, or via USB (USB is not available on the DT82E or DT82I). With a USB connection, the logger automatically installs the USB-serial driver and a piece of software called DTUSB which opens a PPP network connection with the logger, and allows it to be accessed via a web browser.
DataTaker Resource CD: Standard Software, Manuals, Support & Training files DTKDSS-CD – included with Datataker as a USB Flash drive
Note: The legacy DeLogger software is no longer shipped with DataTakers.
Datataker Comparison Chart
Example of scripting language
To read the date, time, then three K type thermocouples every 2 seconds, send the following program to the logger:
R2S 1..3TK These commands mean:
Repeat every 2Sec, ch1 to ch3 Thermocouple K type.
Date and time are returned automatically if desired. These and many other parameters are easily set with software switches.
The data can be returned from the logger in real time, or at a later time from its memory. When logging data to the logger’s own memory, time and date are automatically recorded.
Data can be returned in various forms, for example in column format, which suits display on a dumb terminal:
Date 2/6/2000 (Date & Time may be returned if desired)
Time 00:08:48
1TK 28.4 Deg C (1TK indicates channel 1 with Thermocouple K type etc, etc.)
2TK 29.6 Deg C
3TK 35.2 Deg C
or with numbers only, and any desired delimiter:
00:08:48, 28.4, 29.6, 35.2
00:08:50, 28.5, 29.7, 35.3
00:08:52, 28.6, 29.6, 35.4 etc, etc,
which is suitable for use by a computer program, spreadsheet, etc..
Time can be in hours:min:sec, or just seconds, or decimal hours, and can be either from time of reset, or from last midnight.
Date can be specified, as day number, or dd/mm/yyyy.
The internal real time clock runs from its own battery with ten year life expectancy.
The loggers are highly flexible, and can be set up in all sorts of ways to suit the task to be done.
Datataker Applications
Unattended rainfall simulation Datatakers monitor soil moisture, control sprinkler valves.
Pharmaceutical production Datatakers monitor and control plant temperature and humidity, provide printed proof of consistent environment.
Hospital power supply Datataker monitors natural-gas-powered primary generator, generates alarms, provides long term trending from stored data. Logger sends temperature, pressures, flow, speed, current and voltage to printer every 10 minutes.
Fire fighting foam Datataker activates extinguisher, makes rapid measurements of fire intensity for repeatable testing of foams.
Fishing net behaviour Datataker on fishing vessel records winch speed, net drag, length of net in water for long term study.
Cotton production Datataker monitors rotational speed from pulse outputs of 30 machines.
Cool rooms Datatakers replace chart recorders by using 4-wire PT100 RTD method for reliable, accurate temperature measurement. Datataker software used for trending and archiving.
Process monitoring alongside PLCs Datatakers measure analog processes in aluminium smelter, feed data to BASIC modules connected to PLCs via RS-232. Cheaper than using PLC analog modules. Datatakers also log data.
Water usage in coal mine Every hour, Datataker calculates and logs average, maximum and minimum flow rates from 4–20mA flowmeter. Datataker scales the signal to engineering units and integrates the values, giving an accumulative total.
Network monitoring of shipping containers Several Datatakers, each with CEMs attached, are networked to measure and record hundreds of RTDs in refrigerated shipping containers aboard
ships travelling between Australia and Europe. Host computer can address each RTD directly.
Black box recorder Datataker in portable enclosure is temporarily installed to “lie in wait” for intermittent air conditioning failures.
QA in foam packaging Portable Datataker measures and logs signals from thermocouples embedded in polystyrene samples (indicates curing progress). Logged data periodically downloaded
to computer for QA records.
Chocolate transport Portable Datatakers in problem transport vehicles record temperatures, door open/close, refrigeration on/off. Logger memory cards returned to head office for data evaluation. Spoiled chocolate traced to drivers turning refrigeration units off.
Combustion heater emissions and efficiency Datataker logs fire box/flue temperatures and emissions to provide proof for various countries’ regulatory standards. Real-time plotting via host computer optimises heater design.
Flammability testing Networked Datatakers, each with two CEMs, log data from hundreds of thermocouples in furnace room during testing of building materials.
Yacht development Datataker measures and logs mast flex (from strain gauges) to on-deck laptop computer for immediate feedback and later analysis. Hull temperatures also monitored during curing.
Petrol pump product development Datatakers installed in petrol pumps log temperature, pressure, flow, nozzle switch start/stop times, number of starts.
Outstation monitoring via modem Datataker in each cellular phone outstation logs temperature, humidity, power supply, equipment on/off. Data is accessed by modem from head office.
Vehicle durability tests Datataker in each test vehicle measures deceleration and acceleration (from piezoresistive accelerometer connected as constant current bridge). Data displayed to driver as bar graph on Datataker Panel-Mount Display fitted to dashboard assists driver in maintaining consistent braking/acceleration. Logger also measures various engine parameters. All data logged to memory card (returned to proving centre after test).
…and many more applications.
